Dell Poweredge R510 memory upgrade

$

Hello.

There are two Dell Poweredge R510 servers with following configuration:

CPU: Intel Xeon X5675 (3.06GHz, 6C, 12Mb cache)

Additional CPU: Intel Xeon X5675 (3.06GHz, 6C, 12Mb cache)

64Gb RAM per 2CPU (8x RDIMM 8Gb Dual Rank LV) 1333MHz

We'd like to upgrade the servers with 128Gb RAM.

What is most suitable way to do it?

Can I just order 8 modules per 16Gb RAM and replace?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Supported Low Voltage Memory (PC3L) Configurations for PowerEdge T410

I'm noticing that when populating the first DIMM in each channel (i.e. 3 of the 4 memory slots per processor) with PC3L memory, it runs at 1.35V, as it should.

When I add a DIMM to the fourth slot, memory runs at 1.5V, thereby disregarding the low voltage benefit.

The T410 technical guide says "When operating at the lower voltage, additional frequency and population restrictions can take effect."  Is filling all memory slots considered a population restriction in this context?

Seems like a pretty common thing to do (filling all memory slots)...

Thanks

Dell PowerEdge T110 Amber Light Not booting

I have been using T110 server for 6+ years and last night seems to have died.

When I tried to hard boot it this morning:

  • Blinking Amber light in the front
  • No Video
  • No Bios screen nothing
  • When I opened the box, I can see that Motherboard light is turned on.

What are my options? How can I troubleshoot and fix this?

Thanks

PowerEdge T310 - installing second drive as raid1 with dell server administrator software?

$

Hi all,

Quick question - we have a PowerEdge T310 with one drive in it. We want to install a second drive and put them in raid1. Questions:

  1. Can we use dell server administrator software to do this?
  2. Will this erase the volume on the current drive?

In a perfect scenario, we simply want to install the second drive, set them up as raid 1 and call it a day.

Thank you for any tips!

Supported RAM config of r815 - Dual Rank versus Quad Rank

Hello,

I am hoping to find a little more recent info on the supported RAM configurations for an r815.

The latest info I could find is this 2010 dated doc here:

www.dell.com/.../Poweredge-R815-Technical-Guidebook2010.pdf

According to this document, there are no supported RAM configurations employing Dual Rank 16GB DIMMs.  Specifically note the 256 and 512GB configurations which all call for either dual rank 8GB DIMMs, or 16GB quad rank DIMMs.

What I would like to know is this:

Is that a hardware limitation that persists today, or was that sheet a function of the type and size of DIMMs available at the time of publication?  Going to QR DIMMs means dropping RAM speed to 1066MHz, so there is a penalty to be paid for using QR DIMMs in any config.  Can anyone tell me with certainty whether this limitation still exists?

Thank you for your time!

Hello everyone,

I have R530 Server and I would like to expand my storage using an 3 M2 PCIexpress with 1TB each and arrange an array (RAID) of them.

Should this configuration works with "H730 Controller"?

Thanks in advance;

Poor performance PERC H710P

I am experiencing a serious performance issue with a PERC H710P with 2 RAID 1 Mirrors.

Sys config:

2 Intel Xeon E5-2620 CPU Running @ 2000MHz

32GB RAM

Mirror 1

2 - 2TB SAS Drives

Mirror 2

2 - 2TB SAS Drives

Windows SBS 2011 Server.

With no users connected to the server, I run ParkDale (a HDD read / write testing prog) on mirror 1 (contains the OS and all Windows functions). On the first pass I get a Sequential write of 350 -400 MB/sec. Seq Read 400 -600MB / sec. Random Write 35 - 45  MB/sec Random Read 40 -55 MB / Sec. After the test completes I immediately run it again and typically the Seq Read / Write are cut in half (sometimes the Seq Write will drop below 100MB / Sec.

Running the same test on the 2nd mirror (contains the files for a company wide CRM prog) the numbers are always lower (Seq Write 100 - 200 MB / Sec Seq Read 250 - 400 MB / Sec); and an immediate re-running results in the same performance drop.

Within the CRM is a diagnostic program. This tests the processor and also the disk performance. While it doesn't list hard numbers for test results it does show a bar graph. On the over all tests, the server performs about mid-range - if I were to convert this to a scale of one to 10 - (1 being good); typically fast would be 2; typically slow would be 6 and this server is a 4. On the hard drive test; again 1 to 10 (1 being good) typically fast would be 2 typically slow would be 6 and this server would be 20 (the bar goes off the edge of the test page).

I have updated the FW on the RAID controller, both virtual disks have cache enabled, and are set to write-back. The server has all available updates. I have also stopped all SQL services, disconnected the server from the network and stopped every service I could for testing but nothing seems to make a difference.

Any ideas? Any suggestions? Am I missing something?

change boot order of array with SAS 6/iR Adapter RAID Controller

Hi, i have a server running with a SAS 6/iR Adapter RAID Controller (firmware 00.25.47.00.06.22.03.00) and created a second array.

It seems the controller only boots the first array. I can't find any option to select the other array. I have searched in the BIOS, the boot menu (F11) and also in the configuration utility of the RAID card. but no luck.

I hope this is possible.

So iDrac 6 won't alert of disk failures?

I've been reading online about monitoring whether all the disks are ok on our Raid arrays on our Dell servers. The consensus seems to be that Dell Open Manager needs to be installed to get alerts of disk failures.

We recently had some disk issues on our Dell R420 which has idrac6 enterprise installed. It DID notify us of a "punctured" disk, telling us to replace it, but DID NOT alert us when another disk failed completely and degraded the array. Seems strange.

We just installed some R210 servers and the idrac6 enterprise installed on those doesn't seem to show physical disk status even after firmware update of the idrac.

We're really looking for a simple solution.

Hello.

PowerEdge R720 here

* all latest firmware updated and I MEAN ALL.

* all CERTIFIED DELL BRANDED drives

Twin Quad Core E5-2609 56GB RAM

6 x Dell branded 300GB SAS 15k: capable 6gbps, negotiated 6gbps

Seagate ST3300657SS revision ES66

2 x Dell branded Intel SSD DS S3500 480GB: capable 6gbps, negotiated 3gbps:

INTEL SSDSC2BB480G4T revision D201DL13

My problem is that the SSD are NOT negotiating at 6gbps.

I have updated the drives to the latest 6gbps firmware.

I have checked that force 3gbps transfer for SATA is not selected.

I removed the power and press the off button for 10 sec,

I swapped the drives trays, what else?

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Randolph.

Upgrading R910 from 128GB to 512GB

Dell R910 with 4x E7540 CPUs.

I had 32 x 4G memory modules filling risers A, C, E, G for a total of 128GB.

To upgrade, I now have 32 x 16GB memory modules which should provide 512GB.

How should I disperse these 16GB among the 8 risers to get full access to the full 512GB?

I see there are white and black retainers on each module slot.  I I think this is important but I haven't been able to find what this means.

I see charts starting on page 95 of the R910 Owners Manual that seem to indicate that I should put a 16GB module in every other slot (starting on slot 1) in all of the 8 risers.  Am I on the right track?

Thanks for any tips,
Chris.

I got PCIe communication error, and after replacing the PERC 5/i controller, I see no configurations present for the controller. I tried to import foreign configuraiton, but getting error message. What is the procedure when someone needs to restore the previous configuration for the new controller. If I start new configuraiton, can it keep the existing data and is accessible to boot. Please advise. I see two disks in ready state and one disk in foreign state. Thanks

Poweredge R710- PCIE Fatal Error on bus 0 device 3 function 0 and PCIE Fatal Error on bus 0 device 4 function 0 when shutdown/restart

Hi All,

When I power up the server, everything is ok.(LCD message clear without error)

But when I tried to shutdown or Restart, I have encountered that my server LCD displayed PCIE Fatal Error on bus 0 device 3 function 0 and PCIE Fatal Error on bus 0 device 4 function 0.

When it happened, the screen is frozen at "Shutting Down" . Mouse and Keyboard power are seemingly off at that moment.

I tried with power off the server to clear the message, then the errors come back again on the same moment when shut down/ restart the server.

Running DSET to diagnose, it shows ESM log is full, so I clear the log with DSET feature. But the problem still persist.

Please help.
