Hi,

when running a firmware upgrade with DSU one of our servers a Poweredge R720 failed both an iDRAC and BIOS upgrade. The iDRAC upgrade failed with the statement "Failed to cancel firmware update process" but when checking the log file itself it tells

Did anyone have a similar error before and is it safe to reboot the machine?

Here are the two error messages of the failed updates and I've attached the log files.

Help! Raid 6 files corrupted after a three drives lose power (Perc 6i)

I was working my machine adding an unrelated ssd drive for the OS (not on the raid array) with a RAID 6 array (Prec 6i card is used for this), while doing this the power connector became dislodged from one of the back-planes. It was not dislodged enough for me to notice, at the time but upon restart I saw the RAID array was listed as failed, and three drives were not detected. I shutdown the computer, inserted the connector fully, that fixed the power issue. on restart the drives showed up as bad/unconfigured. I added them back into the array, the RAID manager reports the array as being fine, all my files show up, but I cannot access them. If I try to I will get an error that the file is missing, or that I do not have access to that file when I click on it. *no drives ever actually failed*

I have attempted running a patrol read and consistency check which ran with no errors, but I still cannot access any files. Is there anything I can do in order to regain access to the files on the array?

R640 - weird error

Hi,

Can anyone pls share what the following error indicates? I don't understand it.

"Unable to access Front LED Panel because of a hardware error condition".

The error appears on the dashboard of the DRAC, under Miscellaneous, but gives no indication what hardware is in trouble. Everything seems fine on the server otherwise.

Thx,

John Bradshaw

Replacing both RAID1 disks in an R620

We have a customer that has several PE R620's that have their disks configured in Raid1.

Both of the drives in each server need to be replaced as their reliability is in question (they have taken a fall!!).

Can this be done whilst the servers are operational, by just replacing one disk, allowing it to stripe (how can we confirm it's finished?! - No Dell admin tools installed), and then replace the second disk?

If we used this method, would there be any issue after a reboot, from the RAID controller looking for the old disk serial numbers, or will it just 'forget' the old drives once the new ones are fully striped?

Thanks!

R710 LED power button is off, does not start

Our PowerEdge R710 (Windows 2008 R2, PERC 6/i SAS RAID) does not show any sign of life. Both LEDs on power supplies at the back are green (so, they are operational), and there is a green light ON on the motherboard near the power supply box. However, the power button LED is OFF and if you try to press it nothing is happening.

Front LCD panel is OFF. Pressing system ID button on it (even after holding for several seconds) does not turn the panel ON.

We have tried to reset the server, according to the steps in Wiki "1.3 No Power - No POST - No boot"; however, nothing happened.

What else can we try? Shuffle memory, fans, hard drives? Check the battery?

Please, advice.

is it possible to use 120v psu instead of 200v in Poweredge C6220

Hello,

I am about to setup DELL POWEREDGE C6220 4 NODE server. It has a 200v psu (two of them) but I only have 120v outlet. I have two spare 120v psu from another power edge, they are slightly less wattage 1100w vs 1400w from 200v one. Is it at all possible to use the 120v psu instead?

I apologize I have no experience with this and want to avoid damaging the system, so any advice would be welcome!

Self-encrypting drives and controller question

$

We are looking to start getting Self-encrypting drives on all our new server purchases.

Doing some research and I see the authentication key, is stores on the Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) H700 and H800 adapter cards <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> and are designed with the “on-controller key management”.

My question is, what happens if the controller fails and has to get replaced?

Does a new key have to be set using the BIOS Configuration Utility or how does that work?

Hi,

Are the following memoryconfigurations supported in the R610?

128Gig:

[8][8][8][8[8][8] xx xx [open][open][16][16][16][16]

160Gig:

[8][8][8][8[8][8] xx xx [16][16][16][16][16][16]

If not, can you please suggest how can I have 128G and 160G with a mix of 8Gigs and 16Gigs?

Thanks in advance.

MD1000 Failed Drive

We have an old MD1000 array we have been using for some backups.
15 drives x 2TB.
A drive has just failed and it is an original Dell (Seagate) ST2000NM0001.
Going to take a week to get a new one in so I am wondering if a new Seagate Enterprise ST2000NM0055 or similar, would be ok to use?
We can get these in much quicker.
I know I can mix SAS and SATA but do I need to swap in an identical drive. Cannot afford to lose data.

PowerEdge T310 maximum size Sata HDD

I would like to put a 6TB SATA HDD into a Dell PowerEdge T310 but before i buy the drive i would like to know if it would work.

I don't want to use RAID i just want to attach the drive using SATA.

On the tech spec for the server it says that SATA is 2TB but maximum internal storage is 12TB.

Potential repurposing of idle PE T310

Greetings,

I recently took over as consultant for a client with a PE T310 in a branch office that was used as a file server a few years ago, but has been sitting idle for c. 2 years.  S/T is 2TDBZV1, current specs are 4 GB (2 X 2 GB), 4 X 1 TB SATA HD, Perc 6/i controller, hot-swap drives  4 X 1 TB SATA 7200 drives.  It is running Linux.  I'm considering repurposing it with following specs and using as a backup Windows 2012 DC:

a) replace memory with 32 GB RAM - 8 GB X 4

b) replace HD's with 2 X 1 TB SATA in RAID-1 config

c) Install Windows 2012

Assuming it's not too expensive vs. buying a new unit outright, can this be done?  Thanks for your feedback.

Hi,

Are the following memoryconfigurations supported in the R610?

128Gig:

160Gig:

If not, can you please suggest how can I have 128G and 160G with a mix of 8Gigs and 16Gigs?

R620 - How to uninstall Identity Module

During the recent firmware upgrade window, one of our Sysadmin has accidentally installed the DBE Identity Module for our R620. Upon reboot, the server model shows up as "R620, DBE" instead of "PowerEdge R620" in both the bios and iDRAC.

The functionality of the server is unaffected, but however I am curious as to how to restore it to the original Dell PowerEdge R620 model number.

Here is the link of the Identity module that is currently installed. www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails

Alert when R430 / R730 shutted down - any idea how to?

Hi,

we have Virtualized system using 2 clusters, each is 1x R430 as controller, 3x R730 as HOST server and 1x MD3820i.

There are many usefull diagnostic information used for system health monitoring of HOST (R730).

How to get information when HOST Server (R730) or any other component (SAN, controller) is shutted down unexpectionally? In this case we dont get any information as the providing services are shutted down with server.

Thank You for Your inputs.
