Adding standalone server to dell vrtx?

Hello Everyone,

We just recently purchased the Dell Vrtx with two blade severs to virtualize a few physical servers we had in our environment.   What I want to know is can I somehow connect a third standalone server to make use of the storage in the VRTX chassis and create a 3rd blade server that would not go into the vrtx chassis?

Manage/create/change RAID on running VMware host without reboot.

Hi,

i want to know if this is possible to manage (change) configuration of Dell RAID controller on running VMware host.

For example if I add some disks to the DAS storage shelves connected to H800 controller, I need to configure RAID on these new disks and add new datastore in vCenter without rebooting the machine.

Is it possible?

My config:

Dell PowerEdge R710 server with iDRAC 6 Enterprise
Dell PERC H700 internal storage controller
Dell PERC H800 external storage controller with two DAS disk shelves
VMware 5.5 booting from SDcard
vCenter 5.5 with Dell OpenManage Integration Plugin 2

Through Open Manage Integratilon tab in vCenter i see both controllers and all disks but cannot perform any operation.

Encryption PERC H800 and H700 in R610 server

I'm a little confused about the methods of enabling encryption on a PERC H800  and H700 in a Dell R610.  This may be LKM versus DKM.

After I successfully created the passphrase, the options changed to delete the passphrase, change it, or "save to DKM" or similar wording.  When I selected this DKM option, the option failed.  What is this DKM option?  I am able to lock the virtual drives with the passphrase.

Is the optimum configuration for an H800 in a Dell R610 to enable the TPM chip in the computer bios and have the TPM chip interact with the PERC H800 and H700?

We also have an R620 with H710 and H810-- would I take the same approach, or is Local Key Management preferred (LKM).

I do have all self-encrypting drives attached to the RAID card.

PERC H710 Mini and PowerEdge M620

I've got a few PowerEdge M620 that were supplied with a SD cards only. I've been using them to run ESXi for the last few years. I've now been asked to transfer everything over to Hyper-V. After contacting Dell they sent out SAS drives and a PERC H710. It turns out that the back plain was for SATA drives, these have been returned and SATA drives sent out.

The on board S110 can pick the drives up but the PERC H710 can't see the drives at all.

Does anyone know what I'm missing?

R710 won't boot after firmware update

Hi guys,

I wanted to reinstall a R710 so that we can use it again in our DC, and i saw that the firmware was a bit out of date (a lot actually).

So generated a bootable iso with the repository manager and let it ran on the server. It updated a few items (one of which was the BIOS) and they were all OK.

At the end it said that the program was going to turn the server off and that it should turn back on again after a few seconds, but it never turned off... I turned it off myself after 15 minutes and turned it back on, The fans start blowing out loud and then get quiet (as they should). The LCD display on the front first says Booting (or something like that) and then changes to the custom message that i've put in earlier.

And that's it.. The server hangs and I can't access it. No screen, no keyboard.

The Drac is working and says that everything is OK. The bios firmware version is 1.2.6. The Virtual console also says "No signal". There are no events in the drac that would suggest something is wrong.

What can I do to fix this? I need this server :(

ESXi 5.1 how to expand datastore above 2TB

Hello,

I recently upgraded my Dell PE 415 (Perc H700 controller) with ESXi 5.1 (Essentials kit) with 2 new hard drives and reconfigured the RAID1 virtual disk to RAID5 with 5.46 TB of usable space. The reconfigure was pretty uneventful and everything is working. However, I cannot increase the existing datastore to above 2.0TB. Initially I was able to increase the datastore from 1.81TB to 2.0TB even when the full 5.46TB was visible (and the 3.6TB or so of free space was selected to extent). After the extent or increase there is no LUN listed in the wizard or other space visible in the Datastore properties page when I click Increase. Also I cannot add the available space to a new Datastore.

I am not sure if the problem is related to a driver on the host server (storage, firmware, or vmware driver), the fact the the storage VMFS5 volume (VMFS5.58) is MBR instead of GPT, the version of ESXi 5.1 (5.1.0-799733-standard), or something else. I read that when upgrading from ESXi 3.x to 5.x Datastores were converted from MBR to GPT automatically and/or when extending the Datastore beyond 2TB. That does not seem to be working automatically in this case.

How do I increase the Datastore size above 2TB to use the entire 5.46TB?

I would like to pursue all avenues of non destruction means to add the remaining free space to the existing Datastore before other options are explored.

Thank you for your help.

VRTX - Server/Fabric/PERC/Virtual Disk - Understanding component failures

I'm trying to better understand the internal workings of the VRTX.  Here is my setup to aid in my question:

Hyper-V 2012  failover cluster with 1 M520 as DC and 3 M620s as host servers with two mezz cards for fabric B and C.

Dual SPERC controllers (CSV and Witness virtual disks controlled by SPERC 1 and SPERC 2 as failover/backup)

I notice that the SPERCs are each connected to a fabric switch (SPERC 1 --> Fabric B Switch and SPERC 2 --> Fabric C switch).

What would happen if I were to have  a fabric switch failure?  Lets say its Fabric B switch, so I lose access to SPERC 1 and, consequently, my virtual disks.  Since nothing is wrong with SPERC 1, will my virtual disks failover to SPERC 2?

And if anyone knows Hyper-V well enough, say the PCIe Mezz B card fails in one of my M620s, will the VMs on that host failover because they can't reach the CSV anymore?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

PowerEdge R510 Bios update FAIL

I have 2 PowerEdge R510 Servers that were previously a server from a Medical Company but have now been repurposed on my network for other functions.  Both need BIOS updates.  The problem is, they both are currently at Version 1.1.4.  When I try to run the BIOS update from within windows, It reports success and says it needs to reboot windows in order to apply the update.  After reboot, it does not update the bios and just reloads windows as normal.  I've also tried to boot from a flash drive and run the update from the executable thru DOS.  This fails reporting that the BIOS is not a DELL R510 bios and that it reports itself as " -  ".  Obviously it is an original DELL Motherboard/BIOS.  I need to perform this update because I would like to upgrade the processors to the Xeon 5650 chipset.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

R610 highly unstable with stock ESXi 5.5u2 - would custom iso help?

Decided to upgrade our ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 u2 on our R610:s to get the new hotness, and did it the same way I've installed all along - just grabbed the latest ISO from Vmware. This has worked very well with both 4.1 and 5.1; the systems have been rock solid for years.

5.5 u2 however has severe iSCSI issues, and the machines just hang, drop the iSCSI connections or both, this actually ate one of my VM's. Thank heavens for backups.

I didn't think about grabbing the custom ISO from here, but does that solve these extremely annoying stability issues? I've tried both using software iSCSI (the way it had to be set up originally with 4.1 to get jumbo frames) and now with the built- in hardware Broadcom NIC's, but the moment you put severe pressure on the storage the iSCSI starts dropping and causing catastrophic issues with the entire cluster.

In the cleanup process I've applied all the latest firmware patches, BIOS is now at 6.4.0, I believe it was.

Will 11G-12G hard drives work in 13G servers if we have the right caddies?

Or is there a different firmware for 13G HDD's?

r410 ssd and caddy

We are replacing a failed R410 with a R430.

Thing is we would like to use the dell SSD disks from the R410 in the r430,

We have checked compatibility and it seems the H730P is okay  with the ssd drives (the drives are dell but purchased last year)

What we can't get an answer to is if we need new caddies.

I am told that even though it is a SW raid contoller the S310 should appear in OMSA. Mine doesn't!

Dell webiste says

When the installation is complete, to configure the S130 controller, install  the configuration driver (if necessary) used by Dell OpenManage (OMSA) component.

Do we know what the "configutration driver" is?

On the tech spec for the server it says that SATA is 2TB but maximum internal storage is 12TB.

Dell R610 motherboard replacement model number

Since I haven't got any further with the  E1000 Failsafe voltage error. Contact support. The next thing to do I guess is replace the motherboard of the Dell R610. Looking on eBay there are a number of different model / serial numbers that are mentioned Eg: F0XJ6, 3YWXK, XDN97, 0NCY41 08GXHX and others. What is the motherboard model / serial number I should actually be using for replacement in this Dell R610 which has this failsafe voltage error? Are there other serial numbers this depends on?

(Maybe I am not looking in the right place but even when I enter the service tag in the support web site I can't find the serial number of the motherboard... Let alone if I should be getting the same motherboard again or maybe a "better" one?)

Thanks!

Hello,

We have a batch of rackmount T610 units that we want to convert back to tower units, I know there is a tower-to-rack conversion kit but I am trying to revert them back to towers so I need the rack-to-tower kits.

Does anyone know where to get them or even know what the part number is for this kit?

Thank you!
