Fail to BOOT after BIOS update PowerEdge T110 II

DELL BIOS UPGRADE FAIL / NO BOOT / SYSTEM HEALTH INDICATOR FLASHING AMBER

  • I am/was Running Windows Server 2012 Standard.
  • BIOS was 2.2.3
  • I downloaded the latest BIOS for upgrade for x64 OS (Server 2012)
  • As Administrator I ran the program T110-II_BIOS_G8T83_WN64_2.8.0.EXE obtained from the DELL URL Drivers and downloads for PowerEdge T110 II BIOS Version 2.8.0
  • All  went well and was informed that I would be logged off in less than 1 minute.
  • The Server restarted. All good so far!
  • I powered off the Server. (pulled the power plug for a cold boot) as instructed.

Expecting the BIOS to now be version 2.8.......

  • Plugged in the power chord
  • The Server started normally
  • I noticed that the BIOS was still 2.2.3.
  • OK, so I logged in as Administrator and ran the procedure again, as you do.
  • I followed the bouncing ball, again.
  • I was logged off, as before and the server restarted.
  • I powered off again. ( pulled the power plug).
  • Plugged in the power chord

This is where is the part where it all turns bad

  • Diagnostic lights 1,3,4 are on for a LONG time,
  • The the HDD activity indicator comes on and then off (the HDD is spinning up),
  • Then a Burst from the CPU FAN to full speed, then slowly to very quiet, fan is turning as I can feel air coming out of the CPU heat sink.
  • The 1,3,4 lights go out,
  • The System Health indicator comes on steady BLUE for 10 seconds and it turns AMBER and flashes.
  • Power button light remains on, it does not work (no power down when pressed).
  • I must remove the power chord to start the procedure all over again.
  • Cycle repeats as before
  • There is nothing on the video display, no beeps, no BOOT.

Everything was normal and working before the BIOS flash "update/fail"

HELP!

Is there a backup BIOS (second copy) is there a "jumper" that will help me out here, or do I have a DELL T110 II "paper weight" now?

Thanks in advance.

Rodney

PowerEdge T710 broadcom 5709c

Our new terminal server still relies on our domain controller and file server machine which is a PowerEdge T710

It runs Windows SBS 2008

I'm getting network dropouts between the two machines for up to a minute every few days - at random times of the day, not just at peak usage.

It shows in windows system eventlog as error eventid 4:

Broadcom BCM5709C: The network link is down.  Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected.

The driver is 5.2.14.0 from 2009, I have downloaded v19 to upgrade it.  Will this be enough?

Is it safe to run a Broadcom diagnostics on it?

Any suggestions greatly received.

RAID and ESXI 6

I have a R410 with a Perc S300, 500GB HD 7.2K Sata HDs w/ 16GB RAM - I am looking to install ESXI 6 and have been unsuccessful due to S300 not being supported.  Can you provide some recommendations on a replacement Perc that will work with and run ESXI 6.  Also would recommended Perc support SAS and SATA if we decided to upgrade HDDs.

I've seen Perc 6/i and HD200 but not sure which would be a good replacement for the S300.

Thanks,

Hi,

I have Dell PowerEdge R720 server. I want to put couple of GPU boards in it, one on each riser. Will that work? What size PSU do we need? e.g. 750 W, 1100 W
Also Is there any way to read the PSU, to know power consumption when the system is running?

Thank you,

my poweredge server frequently loses connection with its primary sata hard drive it runs on the onboard controller(might have something to do with the fact I run 8 drives instead of the standard 6)

these are my specs from memory:

1x xeon 3.06ghz cpu

aureal vortex au8820 16bit sound card

ati radeon hd 7950 modified to work in a pcie x4 slot

7x 3.5" sata drives (5 in raid setup) two in normal sata mode

1x 2.5" sata drive (primary drive)

2x 512mb dual-ranked ram

windows 7 ultimate 32bit

standard dell perc raid card

the server is well out of warranty and I rescued it from the e-waste section at the local junkyard.

if anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Dell idrac openssl MITM vulnerability

Hi

We use nessus to scan our network. My most recent scan reports several openssl vulnerabilitis with a cvss score of 9.3, (rated HIGH), see below for details. The products found affected are:

Dell idrac6 1.97

Dell idrac7 1.57.57

Nessus says that the vulnerabilty is confirmed, and the openssl version could also be vulnerable to other openssl issues release on the same day as the OpenSSL 'ChangeCipherSpec' MiTM Vulnerability" released on the 5th of june.

Is this confirmed by dell? will patches be released for this vulnerabilties?

Whoa! I last installed Win server 2012 on a Dell PE R620 and it was very easy using the Dell tool. But now I have a new R630 and a Win server 2012 R2 ISO and I cannot find any documentation for best way to install it.

I will be setting this one up as a HyperV host and 3 or 4 VM's on it.

Can someone please point me in the right direction to install docs?

Driver Pack Updates

Hi,

When doing a general System update via the DRAC (F10) and connecting to an SUU iso, what does the package "Driver Pack Update" do?

Does it actually install new drivers, or just download them to the hard disk for future reference?

Thx John Bradshaw

PowerEdge 310 SAS6IR only show drive on Slot 0

$

Hi all,

As per the description above I have a PowerEdge 310 with integrated raid. When I enter the SAS configuration utility it only show a device being on Slot 0.

I have tried switching the drives and around but it still shows the only drive being slot 0 which to my mind discounts drive failure.

Prior to the other slots not working the RAID was showing as degraded. It was after a few attempts to rebuild the RAID the other slots stop working. Am I likely to need a new cable or controller?

Thanks

Perc H730p Mono Cable part number

I have recently purchased an H730p Mono Mini raid card to upgrade my R730 onboard S controller.

After it arrived, I noticed it doesn't have the same connector type (I believe is SFF-8087) that I use now to connect from the backplane to the motherboard.

Instead, it seems that I need a cable with a flat connector, that will connect with some pins on the Perc board. It is the cable that is numbered "1" on the attached picture

I have been trying to find the part number, but it seems it's not available on dell.accesories website.

Could anyone please tell me the part number?

Any help appreciated,

Perc 5 firmware will NOT update on a 2950

There is a thread about this here, support-forums/servers/f/906/t/19469416 but the answer contains some wrong information, and no way to add to that thread.

The flash posted that the firmware can be found at support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-2950?driverId=2RPK0&osCode=WS8R2&fileId=2974571956,  but that is incorrect.

The page is there but the firmware link goes to an error 500 page.

The firmware listed on that page is different than what is listed on downloads.dell.com/published/pages/poweredge-2950.html#Drivers

The problem i am having is that after updating bios, esm/bmc etc, I try to run the firmware update, it does the inspection and reports an old version and asks if I want to update to 5.2.2.0072

I conform, and then a split second later it says it is done, and does not ask for a reboot, (which I know it should) Eeven after rebooting it is still on the old version 5.0.2-0003

The OS is a fresh install of 200 R2 X64 with all updates.

The exe I am running is from the page I mentioned at support/home/us/en/19/drivers/DriversDetails?productCode=poweredge-2950&driverId=WJG5R

SAS-RAID_Firmware_WJG5R_WN32_5.2.2-0072_A08.exe

I have updated firmware on Percs for many years and have never seen this behavoir so it has me a little perplexed.

I have rebooted and tried a number of times and it is always the same result.

Hello everyone!

I have this brand new Dell PowerEdge R220 Server and trying to install Windows Server 2008 r2 on it. When it comes to choice installation media it prompts me an error saying "no device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers. ".

Also, please guide me or give me a link where I could read about Raid configuration when pressing CTRL+R on start.

Grand mersi in advance.

UPS Network Management Card headaches

$

0

Foreword: I am posting here because there isn't a specific section for UPS hardware and for some reason there is no "New Post" button in the rack equipment subsection in this section.

We have a 3750W Dell rack-mounted UPS equipped with a network management card.

We had a problem in our LAN, a node was generating excessive broadcast traffic; the only actual consequence though was that the UPS management card became unresponsive (massive packet loss, about 99%, and massive latency; as a consequence the managed nodes were unable to communicate with the UPS). When we brought the offending host offline, the problem stopped. Before that, we had swapped the management card with a new one to no avail.

All the other hosts (desktop PCs, switches, servers, printers) were unaffected even during the traffic flood. The only device which could not cope with the anomalous traffic was the UPS card.

It seems to me that it may be the case that the card is equipped with an excessively weak CPU that cannot cope in such a situation; this in turn is very bad because stuff like this can happen in a large LAN and the managed nodes rely solely on this management card to communicate with the UPS. I need a fix shall a similar problem arise again.
