PowerEdge T620 Won't Boot through BIOS

$

Hello all,

I have a Dell PowerEdge T620 that is giving me fits. Whenever I try to boot, I get errors saying "PCIe Training Error: Embedded NIC 1". Looking around, various people have said that I should reseat the cards in the PCIe slots. Done, no difference at all. I also cannot get into BIOS to try to disable NIC 1, as the system continues booting to the error when I hit F2, F10, F11, or F12. Any suggestions?

Every time I try to run the Dell SUU on a trio of servers the application crashes running osinv.exe. We have a large number of R720s in our environment and this trio is the only group that has this problem. The error generated is shown below.

Installation of the Heat Sink and Shroud Assembly in the PowerEdge T105

$

We have purchased spare parts for our PowerEdge T105 server (not including the case) and we are trying to bench-test the parts before we put them into stock.

My question concerns the installation of the "heat sink and shroud assembly", described in the Owner's Manual on page 83, where it states:

Align the two captive screws properly with the system board, then tighten
them to secure the heat sink assembly to the system board.

The screws, though, cannot be threaded into the system board. They extend beyond the board in order to thread, presumably, into mounts on the case. Should the sentence in the manual read "... to secure the heat sink assembly to the case"?

Either the manual lacks clarity or the heat sink assembly we purchased is incompatible with the spare system board.

Thanks in advance for any help to understand how the PowerEdge T105 heat sink assembly is fixed in place.

regards, Andrew

Can RAID 1 Boot from both HDDs?

I have a Dell Poweredge T430 with a H330 PERC RAID Controller which I setup with RAID and in openmanage says it was all ok.

I just wanted to double check before setting everything up it was working ok so decided to unplug 1 drive at a time and check they could both boot up in the event one fails but only one boots up?

Can anyone explain why this is and if the one which boots fails how do I get my system back on as the other HDD doesn't boot? Not done too many RAID setups before so a bit new to me.

Hi!

In 2013 we bought PowerEdge R520 server and since a few month the front panel LCD display is getting darker and darker. Now it's very hard to read. But only the blue light is affected. The amber backlight is as bright as on the first day.

Is there a way to increase the brightness of the blue backlight?

I have a c6100 node in the 4th slot that will not power on.  I tried swapping node 4th slot with slot 3, the issue followed the node.  The most recent change was adding a 10G card I since removed it to see if that was an issue but host still not powering on.

T320 - 2GB OS Partition prevents Windows Backup from working + Missing Drivers from device manager.

Hi,

We recently setup two T320 servers, only to find out that:

  • The 2GB OS Partition we left untouched during Windows Server 2012R2 installation, prevents Windows Server Backup from backing up system state & bare metal.
  • There are a lot missing drivers from device manager.

The installation was done in an hurry in order to replace the old severs that failed, using the Windows DVD without going through Lifecycle Controller that we discovered later.

Since both, are production servers, we do not have the luxury of making a wrong move, so we need a solid solution on both issues.

Thanks

R715 Memory Configuration Not Optimal

$

Hello,

We have a bunch (35 ish) R715s all configured exactly the same. Each with dual AMD Processors and from the factory had 8 x 2gb (1Rx8 PC3L-10600E-09-10-D0) Memory modules in it.

Recently I wanted to test adding extra ram. So I purchased 8 x 4gb (2Rx4 PC3-10600R-9-10-E1) ram. This is based on both Dells manuals and crucials webpage as to what this server would accept. When trying to install this ram these are scenarios and what comes up:

1) Add the 8 new modules to the empty "Black" slots. The machine won't boot at all just buzzes.

2) Take the 8 old modules out of the "White" slots and REPLACE with the 8 new modules. It boots but says "Warning: The installed memory configuration is not optimal".  Yet the bios reads 32gb of ram.

3) Take it down to only 4 modules (new modules). Putting them in as described in "A1,B1,A2,B2" slots. Same "not optimal" message appears and it reads 16gb of ram.

I have also ensured that i am running the latest firmware available. Can you please explain what i am doing wrong and my best option for the ram that I have?

Windows system restore on RAID 1+1, PERC H700

$

Greetings,
I have encounter such problem, trying to restore windows server .
System setup: Poweredge R710 server with PERC H700 Raid controller, configured for 2 VD RAID1 (4 physical SAS drives), and Windows Server 2008 x86 SP2 instaled.
Goal: Restore windows system (drives C,D) using windows system image. I'am strictly limited to use only windows server backup feature, no other imaging software is allowed.
My seuqncing of action:
1. Using F10 utility mode I configured OS deployement.
2. After boot from Windows server 2008 x86 SP2 DVD I pushed Repair link.
3. There problem is that windows restore can't find any windows system installation, because initialy it can't find any of 2 RAID1 VD configured in RAID H700 controller. Additional installation of latest PERC H700 Drivers from external USB drive does not help.
4. Then I closed repair windows and tryed to run installation of OS, because earlier Windows Server was succefuly deployed like that. Windows installer found two internal disks Disk3 (C:), Disk4 (D:) and one external HDD Disk2 with system image.
5. So I closed installation window and started repair once again. It didn't detected any Windows OS but now it was able to see RAID1 drives Disk3 and Disk4.
6. I tryed to run restore procedure using system image, but it ended with error "A data disk is currently set as active in BIOS. Set some other disk as active or use the DiskPart to clean the data disk, and the retry the restore operation."
7. Using CMD and Diskpart I have cleaned Disk3 and Disk4. Then I was able to start windows restore from system image and operation ended without mistakes.
8. But after reboot BIOS was not able to find any bootable device.
9. I loaded from windows DVD once again and tryed to fix it using CMD and BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD command. It was able to find G:\Windows but ended up with "no installations found".
10. Right now I'am in dead end.

Can somobody help with detecting possible cause of the problem and maybe even a sollution to it?

We have another r710 servers with perc 6/i RAID controllers, configured as RAID5. And I don't have any problem with them.

Thx in advance!

T420 - Disk Drive Question (Sata Cabled + SAS / Sata 2.5 / 3.5 is it possible?

$

Hello,

I purchased the PowerEdge T420 with a single SATA drive. I added 3 more to max out the internal cabled to 4

I am wondering though, can I ALSO add the hot swap 2.5 or 3.5 and have them all work. I assume I need to buy some special raid card if it's possible at all.

What I want to be able to do is have the 4 cables + start adding the other 2.5 or 3.5 (depends on prices) and slowly build it up.

If it is possible could you please recommend that card I should use to make that happen?

thank you so much

Correct way to upgrade existing RAID-1 2TB disks to 6TB on H710P controller

$

Currently we have 2 x 2TB drives on a RAID-1 configuration (among other disks) on a H710P controller. The virtual drive currently have no data. Let's say in Windows it is listed as F drive. What is the correct process to follow to

a) Identify the correct physical disks

b) upgrade them to 6TB

While I do not have any data on these two drives, I have data on other drives, which I want to leave as it is.
