PowerEdge 2950 Perc 5i Disk in Foreign State and Battery Failed

$

Hello,

I have a PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc 5i RAID Controller with a RAID 5 config with 4 disks.

One of the disks failed and we replaced it with a disk from an old server, so it contained data. Now it says that the disk is in "Foreign State". The only available takss are Blink or Unblink, but on the Storage Dashboard directly on the Perc 5i we can do a "Clear Foreign Configuration".

What could be the solution for this? Can we do a "Clear Foreign Configuration without losing any data or corruption on the Virtual Disk?

ON other thing is that the RAID battery has failed. We have a new battery so we can replace it. What will be the correct order to solve both issues?

Thank you for your answer.

Update Failure Process Secure Update Failed - OS Driver Pack / Drivers for OS deployment version stuck at 0 now

I have been updating a set of R520 servers and one it stuck where the OS Driver Pack / Drivers for OS Deployment are stuck at ZERO.

When updating on Linux no matter what flags are used the update gives the error:

Update Failure: Process Secure Update Failed

When trying both:

-bash-4.1# ./R520_Drivers-for-OS-Deployment_Application_6MNTV_LN_14.11.02_A00.BIN -n -f -q

and

-bash-4.1# ./R520_Drivers-for-OS-Deployment_Application_FXMYH_LN_15.02.12_A00.BIN -n -f -q

The error persists. (the -n -f switches didnt help, just tried with and without them).

What I did next was to go into the lifecycle controller on my R520 and have the Lifecycle controller download and install the OS driver firmware which was listed as version "0".

This ended up working (temporarily) and took about 5 minutes once the update started.

Then it showed the correct version (15.02.12) as "Current"

However, upon a cold restart, it fell back to version 0 and was back to being broken

This is should be addressed by Dell ASAP. I've tried all the usual tricks to get the OS driver pack firmware reinstalled and its stuck.

This problem started while running all the updates for the R520 on this ISO:

dell.app.box.com/BootableR520/1/4114974887

Seems like 15.02.12 is a bad update and bonks the OS drivers.

Others have been having trouble with M6xx servers and R7xx servers in another thread which is not being addressed.

All other firmwares on this R520 are current and seemingly working properly.

Will update post/thread with firmware manifest.

Any help getting this firmware issue straightened out is greatly appreciated.

Help with iDrac 6 - ping stops responding

$

Hello everyone,

I've came to these forums with a strange issue we have with around 10 servers.

we upgraded the dell firmware on almost all of our servers in the last 12 months and we've found with a few of them that since upgrade all firmware that dell idrac 6 enterprise (shared nic with LOM) stops responding to pings.

if we reboot the server it pings for around 1-2 minutes then stops pinging.

replacing the drac 6 enterprise card does not fix it either (i've not tried replacing express card).

today i found a server that works just fine with drac and i access it daily, i did a firmware upgrade:

Checking OS Drivers Pack, 7.3.0.10, A00 - 7.3.0.10
        Available: dell_dup_componentid_18981 - 14.10.00
        Found Update: dell_dup_componentid_18981 - 14.10.00

Running updates...
 100% Installing dell_dup_componentid_18981 - 14.10.00
Done: Update Success

once it was finished, I rebooted the server.

now we have this issue with the drac on this server no longer replying after uptime of 1 or 2 mins.

idrac is running firmware 1.99, all servers with this issue are Dell R210/R210 II

I've too tried doing resets to default in bios, and re-setup the cards which did not fix the issue!

hopefully someone reading this thread can help me get this issue resolved.

Dell T430 Server - is there room for extra network cards?

Hi,

Can I add in extra Network xcards to the Dell T430 server? It comes with 2 already but cant find out how many spare slots there are on the motherboard to add anymore in?

Its because it will be hosting a number of VMs I want to assign Hyper-V 2 (or more if possible) network ports to ensure the speed of the VMs is quick over the network. Currently this cant be done as one port has to be kept for the server management and then 1 assigned to Hyper V.

Thanks

Degraded RAID 1 on Dell t110 server

We have a dell t110 server (2008 SBS) which i have been asked to look after.

4 drives, 2 arrays, 2 x 250 + 2 x 500

On recent reboot system tells me raid array 0 (2 x 250) is degraded.

However, on looking in the open manage system, Array 0 is degraded and it looks to me that i can assign a global hot spare to array 0.  See attached.

No-one seems to know whether a faulty drive has been removed and new one added without rebuilding. Is there any way to know wether this is the case, or should i replace the drive anyway ?

And will selecting global hot spare rebuild this array ?

Thank you any help in advance.

Swapping PERC RAID controller cards

$

We currently have two physical servers in a datacenter, (a PowerEdge R610 and a PowerEdge R815). We recently acquired four new Dell PowerEdge R610’s.

The original physical servers in the Data Center have PERC H200 RAID controllers installed. These allow for RAID 0,1,10 as options. The 4 new physical servers we have acquired all come with PERC 6/i RAID controllers; these allow for RAID 0,1,5,6,10,50,60 options.

Two of the new servers have 2 CPUs (4 cores each=8 cores total) while two of them have 1 CPU (4 cores each=4 cores total). The original servers are 1x R610 with 2 CPUs (i.e. 8 cores) and 1x R815 with 2 CPUs (16 cores each=32 cores in total).

I’d like to remove the PERC 6/I controllers from the two new R610s with only 1 CPU and install them into the original R610 & R815. This would allow us to maximize disk space and performance on the 4 servers with 2 CPUs, especially the R815 with 32 cores. And then the H200 controllers from the R610 & R815 would be installed in the 2x R610 servers with only 1 CPU.

According to the information found at http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-raid-controllers the 6/I uses PCI-Express 1.0 while the H200 uses PCI-Express 2.0. I’d like to know if it’s do-able to switch the PERC controller cards in the original R610 and R815 servers. Since one of the originals is an R610 and all four new servers are R610, I can assume that the PERC 6/i can be installed. What about the R815?

Can anyone offer any advice on whether or not this is a viable option, and if not why?

PowerEdge R310 doesn't turn ON

First of all. Warranty expired last September 2015.

Server doesn't turn on. I order a new power supply and still same.

I tried to started disconnecting the RAID controller and still same.

It has just one memory stick and I just have changed the slot and still doesn't power on.

I disconnected everything from the motherboard and still the same.

Once in a while when I connect back the power it makes noise like is trying to start but that's it.

The LCD screen always is flashing with the server name.

Any idea what could be the problem?

Thank you

No power on m1000e

I installed a m1000e into a rack and plugged in all of the PSUs to the PDU. The AC lights are on but the DC lights on the PSU are not. Nothing comes on but there is a "no CMC found" error on the LCD front panel. There are also no lights on for the CMCs,fans, or switches.

Does the CMC control whether or not the DC out is on for the PSUs? All 6 of my PSUs have only 1 green light(AC).

I'm not sure what is wrong or bad.

PowerEdge T310 degraded but hard drives show OK

Thanks to all who read this and any that reply. I have a T310 that the company I work for took over. The server is functioning but I noticed in open manage that the raid showed degraded and the amber light was blinking on the front of the case, I don't recall the pattern. The raid controller is a perc s300 with 3 500 gig hds in a raid 5. Open manage says the hard drives are fine. I didn't get an option to rebuild the raid. The only options I have are delete, assign/unassign and rename. I updated open manage from 7.2 to 7.4 and cleared the logs. The amber light went to solid blue but raid still shows degraded.

The perc driver version is 2.0.0-0162

The bios version is 1.8.2

The service tag is [[[SVC TAG REMOVED BY MODERATOR]]]

The OS is windows server 2008r2

Any advice would be appreciated. And when looking for the newest version of open manage there were several options. What would be the option for an iso of the disk we usually get in the box with a new server? Thanks

Hello,

I have a PowerEdge 1950 BIOS 2.7.0 with DRAC 5 Firmware Version 1.65 (12.08.16).

When trying to connect to "Console" I am receiving the error  "Error when reading from SSL socket connection".

I did comment the line "#   jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms=SSLv3, RC4, MD5withRSA, DH keySize < 768" at java.security file but still the same.

I am using WIndows 10 with latest FireFox.

Thanks in advanced,

PowerEdge R510 RAID 5 Foreign Disks Question

$

I am not our IT expect, but am relatively competent, just not to a recognised professional level I suppose, so we outsource that stuff and although we have a chap looking into it, he is slow, hasn't really given me an answers he has't blatantly just got from Google right in front of me, and then he disappears for long periods, so I thought I would post here in the meantime, so here goes.

We have a PE R510 with x2 RAID 5 channels containing x6 600GB SAS disks in total, so x3 disks each channel on a PERC H700.

We came in Monday morning to a non-responsive server and message on the screen reading:

There are offline or missing virtual drives with preserved cache. Please check the cables and ensure that all drives are present. Press any key to enter the configuration utility.

Visually I could see 3 discs showing warning lights, disks 2 and 3 in the first RAID channel (RAID 0) which is the OS only, more or less, and disk 5 in the second channel (RAID 1) – which is the bulk of the data on the server.

I’ve since replaced disk 5 with a new disk and RAID 1 has successfully rebuilt, but RAID 0 is still down and I have no OS to boot to – so am still locked out of access to the data.

So, concentrating on RAID 0 I established disk 2 was blinking green two times per second which suggests a ‘preparing for removal’ status, disk 3 was blinking green and amber, suggesting a predicted fail.

Turning quickly back to the IT expert, he has now gone away to get tools etc. with the plan of coming back and taking the server away so he can the recreate RAID 0 with new disks and reinstall an OS on it, however, in the meantime having looked through these forums I’ve had a sniff around myself.

If I go into the PD MGMT on the H700 screens this tells me disks 2 and 3 are marked as Foreign, with disk 1 showing online. Several suggestions here seem to suggest in such instances we should be using the Import option to import this config. to the array. In my mind if the plan is to have the server taken away to have this RAID recreated from scratch anyway, we’ve nothing to lose by giving this a go - with the one exception of time, does that sound right?

My question is then, given the above – how long might it take to see if the Import function works? If it is likely to take several hours, I may as well just let the chap take the server away for a day and come back with a new OS installed tomorrow, but if this import function is likely to get me into the OS within an hour maybe 2, tops, for example – it might be worth a shot sitting and waiting.

I eagerly await the forums advises.

Thank you in advance.

Since the CMC firmware update to 5.12 my M1000e is sending this alarm several times an hour:

Power supply 3 is operating normally

I have switched PSU-3 with PSU-4 already, no change. All 6 power supplies are fine, 1 and 2 are online, 4 to 6 are on standby and 3 is switching between standby and online. How do I configure it to only send real alarms?

Hard Drive Testing with Dell Diagnostics

We are testing some Hard Drives using Dell Diagnostics on a R510.

There are different tests.  SMART Test.  Short Self Test.  Confidence Test.  Buffered Test.

We have some drives that pass Smart, Buffered and Short Self Test.  However they fail Confidence Test.

What does this mean?  Do we need to be worried? Are we testing them properly?

I have an 8 year old PowerEdge 2900 that the OS hard drives are almost full (73GB drives mirrored @ 95% full)  I want to replace them with 300GB drives to buy me another year.  I have an image of the drives but when I put the new drives in the Raid controller said I was missing the VD.

How can I get the Raid controller to recognize the new drives so I can put the image on them?

PowerEdge R710, fans at full speed

$

Hi All,

Got 3 Dell R710's in an environment.

Installed an additional HDD into a spare slot, all was good.

Approx 2 days later, the fans went nuts... full speed, constantly.

Take out the new drive, same issue, use repository manager to get all firmwares and drivers up to the current level, same issue.

Put the drive back in, works fine.... but the fans are still going at full tilt either way.

The only helpful post ive been able to find suggests hacking the firmware, which seems a bit extreme.

The front panel reports the system temp at 26 deg... so the system isn't actually trying to cool down from anything, the fan controller just seems to have gone a bit nuts.

Any suggestions ?
