PowerEdge R730 - replace onboard S130 RAID

Hi There - I have a PowerEdge R730 that was purchased with onboard S130 software array controller.  It has an 8-bay 3.5" backplane for the drives.  Would like to purchase a PERC H330 raid card (P/N 405-AAEI) to do hardware RAID.  I am looking to know which Dell cables will be required to do this.  Any help or assistance pointing in the right direction would be appreciated!  Thanks.

Failing to boot after BIOS update on T110ii

I have just updated my BIOS on my T110ii (from 1.1.1 to 2.8.0) (because I've been getting some crashes which should be fixed by some intel microcode updates).

However, after the update it fails to boot and is displaying the "3" diagnostic light with no output on vga or ipmi.

Sequence is:

* 3 diagnostic light comes on

* For a short time 1 and 4 come on as well, and fan goes to max rpm

* Then just 3 remains on and the system health indicator flashes amber.

The documentation suggests this is CPU failure, but this seems very unlikely since it was fine before the BIOS update.

I've tried clearing the NVRAM and disconnecting everything I can from the motherboard, but that doesn't help.

Is there anything else I can try?

Are there any known issues with updating from 1.1.1 to 2.8.0 ? (I couldn't see any in the documentation).

I did find a few other threads where people have had systems which no longer boot after a bios update, so I wonder if there is some underlying issue.

OMSA reports disk as 'Non-Critical'

T320 server with PERC H710 controller. Two sets of disks connected. One set SAS (RAID 1) and one set SATA (RAID 1). OMSA displays a yellow exclamation mark at one of the physical SAS drives. I replaced the drive with a similar one, but the yellow exclamation mark persists? Rebooted the machine a couple of times, but that doesn't resolve the issue. Also, OMSA doesn't list some properties of the new drive, like Part Number and Manufacturer day/week/year.

Checked the drive in iDRAC and everything is fine - green check marks everywhere.

So I wonder what's going on?

Degraded RAID 1 on Dell t110 server

We have a dell t110 server (2008 SBS) which i have been asked to look after.

4 drives, 2 arrays, 2 x 250 + 2 x 500

On recent reboot system tells me raid array 0 (2 x 250) is degraded.

However, on looking in the open manage system, Array 0 is degraded and it looks to me that i can assign a global hot spare to array 0.  See attached.

No-one seems to know whether a faulty drive has been removed and new one added without rebuilding. Is there any way to know wether this is the case, or should i replace the drive anyway ?

And will selecting global hot spare rebuild this array ?

Thank you any help in advance.

PowerEdge 2850 Updates

Our 2850 has a bad RAID DIMM so we decided to retire it (in its current role) and re-purpose it. Firmware, BIOS, etc. is out of date. Is there a way to update those before we load an OS? It was running Windows 2000 but am going to load CentOS and Nagios on it (after we replace the DIMM) but want to make sure the hardware has all the updates first. If not, I may just load an OS long enough to update everything but wanted to check to see if maybe there was a ISO that has everything up to date on it.

Thanks in advance!

Perc 6i RAID 5 question

We are trying to rebuild a RAID  5 array but our virtual disk is offline resulting in three missing drives out of six that made up the array.  We initially had one drive that was degraded but upon further inspection realized our virtual disk was offline.  We have since cleared the foreign disk to try and automatically rebuild the array but have had no success and their is currently no option to rebuild.

Is it possible to rebuild a RAID 5 array when your virtual disks are offline and the controller is only reporting 3 out of the 6 drives as online?  Thank you for your help!

PowerEdge 2950 hard drive compatibiliy

Hi,

I've recently picked one of these up for free.  I want to use it as a server for home use, specifically as a VM host.  I pulled out the drives and they are SCSI 36 GB drives.

I'm pretty sure it's a first gen.  I read a lot about SAS/SATA drives being compatible, however, but never see generation cited.  Am I able to use drives such as these?

Am I able to purchase adapters?  Thinking I might just need to junk this server since I'd like to see at least 500 GB to 1 TB of storage in it.

Thanks!

T310 and ESXi on a PERC S3000

Hello,

So I am finding mixed responses. It appears that ESXi doesn't support the T310 when a PERC S3000 is installed, yet the dell site lists it as compatible.

So........

Does it work or does it not?

If it does can someone point me to the installer?

Thank you,

Problems with RAID1 - PowerEdge T110 II

Hi all,

I'm with the problem, an unauthorized user accessed the server, and Windows will not boot anymore, I do not know what she did, but looked RAID controller settings - PERC S100 (was configured as RAID1), and visualized the following message :

Virtual Disks

1---RAID1, 465GB, Failed

2-NonRAID, 465GB, Failed

3-NonRAID, 931GB, Failed

Does anyone know how it could recover the data?

PowerEdge T105 -- failed bench build

We're a nonprofit with very limited budget and we have a working PowerEdge T105 server. We'd like to protect it by acquiring a full set of spare parts. I bought a motherboard (0D682C), an AMD Opteron 1352 processor, a heatsink assembly (GP172), a processor fan (WP747), a front I/O control panel (GP461) and a power supply (L305P-01 NH493). I borrowed RAM from our working server. I connected a floppy drive, a SATA hard drive, a keyboard, a mouse, and a VGA screen (all known good parts), and put it together on the bench without a case.

It turns on but won't boot up. That is, the power light turns green (but the four front panel lights in the GP461 I/O panel never turn on and off), the processor fan spins, the hard disk powers on and nothing else happens. I ordered another processor but it didn't help.

Our production server has a motherboard part number of 0P957K, which is different from the 0D682C that I purchased. Could this be the problem? (The Opteron fits correctly into the 0D682C.)

The memory is known good and I've tried another power supply to no avail. The floppy is never accessed. There is never any display on the VGA screen.

Before I purchase another motherboard, is there anything else to try? Could the PowerEdge require its case to start up correctly?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Is the Xeon X3320 (Yorkfield, 6M Cache, 2.50 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, LGA775, 95W) supported by the PET100? I want to upgrade the CPU and my options ($) are the E3110 or the X3320.

And about the C2Duo E8400, the C2Quad Q8400 or the C2Quad Q9400? If I can upgrade to one of them (less expensive) I can invest on another RAM stick...

Share through DFS not accessible

So I am not a server technician, nor incredibly knowledgeable with servers in general, but I've been working in IT for about 7 years and have a client who recently had an issue with a file server.

He has a server, NAS1, where is has Modular Disk Storage Manager running. Everything looks fine except the batteries on both his raid controllers have gone bad. They are both still listed as being online, despite the batteries. He is running RAID 6 to host a virtual drive.

In looking under DFS he has a folder (located when I navigate to \\NAS1\), filled with links to other folders.

The links point to \\DFS\R1_client but when I attempt to navigate there, I get an error saying it doesn't exist.

Is there a way to look at the real entire contents of the entire drive?

I feel like when I navigate to \\NAS1\ I'm just seeing mapped shares from wherever the real drive is located, but I don't know how to access it.

All these DFS links broke the moment his second controller battery died, so would this have anything to do with it? Is it an issue with the controller?

This is a bit over my head and so any detailed walkthroughs of what may be the case would be HIGHLY appreciated. :)

Problem Accessing iDrac6 Enterprise web interface

Hi all, I have 2 (new to me) Dell R710's with iDrac6 enterprise cards.  I cannot access the web pages to log into the devices.  When I scan the ports, there are no ports open, neither 80 nor 443, nor any other.

I have configured the cards for both servers from the BIOS (ctrl--E), and set to dedicated, ipv4  addresses (same subnet as my LAN (All I really need is remote power options) ), setup username and password, etc.

I attempted to install the 30-day license from Dell without success, but, I'm not sure if this is truly the problem.  Also, I have (today) purchased (2) iDrac enterprise licenses from Dell and should be receiving them in 3-4 days via email, just in case.

I've used previous generations of Drac cards without issue.  Am I missing something here?

Thank you for the help!

Poweredge R510 PERC H700 Degraded Raid 5 after replacing predicted failure drive

$

I had 1 drive in a RAID 5 array with a predictive failure but the array was fine.  I replaced it with the same model drive.  The rebuild started but failed.  Now the array is degraded.  Should I put the original drive back in until I can get another drive?  I've also ordered some additional drive trays so I can insert the new drives as hot swaps instead of replacing the drive.  Any advice would be appreciated.  My warranty is out and I'm having difficulties renewing it due to the accout being in the leasing company's name and some sort of account hold.  What a nightmare.
